A year ago, I was nearing the end of my master’s program, and I was wrestling with rejoining the workforce after being a stay-at-home mom for several years. I was in an internship position at a counseling agency doing what I loved: helping individuals and families find freedom and joy in their lives.
This unique position allowed me to create my own schedule, see however many clients I wanted, and work from home whenever I needed. Essentially, it allowed me to have the most beautiful work-life balance.I sought out employment opportunities through my supervisor, but nothing was available. I was so disappointed. It seemed as if I struck gold, only to have to return it all after nine months.
Although the doors seemed to have closed, the Lord still placed it on my heart to remain open minded about my plans for after graduation. Not long after this, the Lord used someone from church to give a prophetic word over my situation.
After service one Sunday, Donn Dietz approached Joseph and I and said he felt led to pray over me. He was honest in confessing he had no idea why but wanted to step out in faith. I told him just a little bit about what was going on. After he was done praying, he stated, “I feel a strong sense from the Lord that he has plans for you to pursue both–being a mother and a counselor.” This word was so encouraging, and it resonated deeply within my heart.
Donn’s obedience to use his spiritual gift of prophecy exemplifies his love for God and the church. 1 Corinthians 14:1-3 states: “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.”
The spiritual gifts God gives us are for His plan and purposes, not our own. Don did not understand why the Lord impressed on his heart to pray over me, but he did anyway, and the result of that obedience produced immediate comfort, encouragement, and strength as I felt seen by the Father.
About a month after Don’s prayer, my supervisor approached me and said that another therapist within our collective was interested in hiring me. I could keep my current schedule, and she would pay for my clinical supervision. The prophecy spoken over me had come true. I am so grateful for our church family, for the giftings God has given His people, and for their wiliness to step out in faith to bless others.
